Mark Jackson Should Pivot to College Coaching, Not the NBA

,

I don’t know Mark Jackson personally. How badly he wants to coach again, or what’s true about all the stuff people say happened behind closed doors during his Warriors run. But from the outside looking in, the man keeps interviewing for NBA jobs, most recently with the Knicks in June 2025. That says something.

The Knicks passed and they hired Mike Brown instead, and just like that, another door slammed shut.

Let’s be honest the NBA doesn’t seem interested in bringing Mark Jackson back. Whether it’s the unconfirmed reports of past locker room drama, rumored homophobic comments from years ago, or just front offices thinking his coaching style is outdated, it’s not happening. The league is younger, more image conscious, and analytically driven now. Even with endorsements from Rick Pitino and Shaq, Jackson still can’t get in.

So if the goal is still to coach? To help shape players? College basketball is sitting right there.

The NBA Has Moved On

Mark Jackson’s run with the Warriors (2011–2014) wasn’t bad. He helped lay the foundation for one of the greatest NBA dynasties ever. Steph Curry and Klay Thompson credit him for their growth. But reports again, unverified, follow him like bad credit. That includes a 2012 extortion scandal tied to an affair, locker room friction, and alleged comments about Jason Collins and Rick Welts.

In addition an offense that never ranked higher than 12th despite having elite shooters, and yeah. The NBA has the right fair or not to keep it moving.

His most recent interview with the Knicks didn’t lead anywhere, just like previous shots with the Timberwolves (2016), Lakers, Kings (2022), and Knicks again in 2018. At this point, we’re in “definition of insanity” territory.

College Hoops Could Actually Work

If Jackson’s purpose is building up players, college might actually be the better fit. He played 17 years in the league. Over 10,000 assists, Rookie of the Year. That matters to young guys trying to make it. He could walk into a living room and instantly has credibility.

He knows how to develop guards. What he did for Steph? He could show college point guards how to read a floor, lead a team, and master the teardrop. Jackson being from New York, he’d have pull in recruiting, especially at a school like St. John’s nah “Pitino” or another mid-major trying to level up.

It’s Not 2014 Anymore

Coaching college ball is a grind. Recruiting, NIL chaos, and compliance. But it’s also where coaches go to rebuild. If some of those past allegations are holding him back, this gives him a shot to reshape his story. Show growth and impact.

Final Word

Mark Jackson clearly still wants to coach. But if he’s serious, it’s time to stop chasing NBA jobs. College basketball offers something better, purpose, influence, and a way back in, if that’s still the dream.

The NBA may have moved on. That doesn’t mean he has to.
