The Los Angeles Lakers enter the 2025-2026 NBA season with a roster that looks good on paper but deeply questionable in reality. They got Luka Dončić, Deandre Ayton, and 40-year-old LeBron James still chasing one more ring. Beneath the headlines are real issues. Like leadership that’s more passive-aggressive than passionate.
LeBron James and Rich Paul Subtweeting

LeBron James can still ball. But at this point, it’s not just about numbers. He picked up his $52.6 million player option like a man who still wants to win, but his approach to leading is more passive-aggressive than proactive. Rich Paul “monitoring” the roster through the media and whispers that Luka now has more pull within the organization.
James iron grip in L.A. has clearly loosened. With Luka in town, his chess moves won’t work anymore.
Luka Dončić A Superstar Talent With Questionable Motor

Luka Dončić is one of the Top 5 players on Earth. I’m just being real, but he’s also known as one of the most sluggish in crunch time. He’s 26 and just finished a season averaging 28.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 7.8 assists. But “lazy” keeps popping up next to his name.
Is it fair? Kinda but his calf injury last season slowed him down, and he does need extra conditioning work. The perception is reality in L.A., and he look gassed in the fourth quarter of a playoff game and didn’t close out on defense.
Lakers fans watched Dončić and LeBron struggle to stay in front of defenders in their first-round loss to the Timberwolves. Jaden McDaniels looked like Scottie Pippen. Luka’s deliberate style doesn’t always play well next to a 40-year-old superstar, especially one who’s used to teammates sacrificing everything for the cause. This ain’t Dallas and Los Angeles doesn’t do sympathy for superstars.
Deandre Ayton: The Biggest??????

Signing Deandre Ayton was supposed to solve the Lakers’ size issue. He’s got the tools for a 7-footer with a soft touch, career averages of 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds, and the kind of size they Lakers need. Ayton and Luka could be a nasty pick-and-roll combo if Ayton is able to lock in.
We all know Portland run didn’t scream championship DNA. The reports of him having a low motor, inconsistent effort, and bad body language, led to Portland buying him out.
The Lakers are hoping new coach JJ Redick can reach him. Luka says he’s excited about Ayton but excitement doesn’t equal effort.
Championship or Implosion?

The Lakers’ starting five is solid on paper. Last year’s 50-32 record isn’t bad. But numbers won’t fix what’s broken under the surface, fragile egos, uneven effort, and unclear leadership. Plus a new coach with little NBA experience and the fact that both LeBron and Luka could be gone within two years.
If I’m being honest, this feels less like a team building a contender and more like a last ditch star experiment. The kind of thing you do when you’re a new ownership desperate for headlines while praying it somehow gels.
The front office is clearly betting on Luka long term. But if this season goes sideways and if Ayton fades, then LeBron will makes waves. If Luka doesn’t adapt don’t be surprised if things unravel fast and he’s out the door.
Bottom Line
This Lakers team could make a run or flame out by Valentine’s Day. Talent isn’t the issue, leadership without connection and work ethic without consistency. Rarely ends in rings. Unless someone steps up and actually leads instead of just cryptic quotes or shrugs to criticism. Then 2025-2026 Lakers are more likely to be a fascinating train wreck than a Finals team.
