The Democratic Party’s Fatal Flaw, Eating Its Young

,

opinion:

The Democratic Party is self destructive, it devours, its rising stars. At a time when voter enthusiasm low, especially among those under 40, the party sidelines bold, energetic voices like Zohran Mamdani and Summer Lee in favor of recycled names and outdated strategies. It’s not just shortsighted, it’s political suicide.

Why Young Voices Are Sidelined?

Fresh faces threaten the status quo. Mamdani, a 33 year old democratic socialist, stunned the 2025 NYC mayoral primary by defeating Andrew Cuomo, an establishment favorite backed by billionaire donors like Michael Bloomberg. The party’s old guard fought him at every turn, mad at his calls for rent freezes and free childcare. Similarly, Summer Lee faced fierce opposition from party insiders in her 2022 congressional race, despite her grassroots momentum.

Why? Young progressives challenge donor pipelines, consultant contracts, and entrenched hierarchies. The establishment clings to its sinking life raft, veterans like Cuomo fearing “unelectable” risks, even as voters demand change.

This gate keeping alienates the future

Young voters are told to “vote blue no matter who,” are silenced when they try to lead. Data shows the stakes: in 2024, only 50% of 18 to 29 year olds voted, down from 55% in 2020 (per CIRCLE). By crushing its young talent, the party risks losing the energy needed for 2025 and beyond. Mamdani’s upset win in NYC’s Democratic primary on June 24, 2025, proves progressives can triumph, but only after battling a system rigged for the old guard.

Democrats need to nurture, not burn

Democrats must stop acting like gatekeepers and start behaving like gardeners, planting and protecting new growth. That means embracing new candidates like Mamdani, who bring passion, and people to the table. It means reforming primaries to amplify fresh voices, not drown them out with establishment cash. If the party keeps burning its crops to prop up the oldest trees, it’ll face a nasty future. Support bold leaders now, or watch the electorate walk away.
